With the school year wrapped and the first days of summer settling in, let’s take a deep breath—and maybe even a barefoot walk in the grass. June 20th is National Flip Flop Day, and while it’s a fun, summer-vibe celebration, it’s also a perfect symbol for what teachers most need right now: ease, comfort, and permission to let go of structure for a while.

Whether you’re kicking off your shoes or slipping on sandals, may this be a season of lighter steps and brighter spirits.

Flip a Routine

What’s one daily routine you can “flip” this summer? Maybe it’s trading your phone scroll for a walk, or swapping a morning rush for quiet journaling. Small changes can unlock surprising joy.

Healthier

Walk Barefoot

Grounding, or walking barefoot on grass or sand, can reduce stress and help regulate your nervous system. If it's safe and accessible, try a few minutes of barefoot time each day—it's simple and surprisingly soothing.

The science behind this is fascinating: our feet have thousands of nerve endings that connect to different parts of our body. When we make direct contact with the Earth's surface, we absorb negatively charged electrons that can help reduce inflammation and balance our body's electrical state. Studies have shown this process, known as "earthing," may improve sleep quality and decrease cortisol levels.

Reflect on Your “Flip Flop” Moments

Think back to a time during the school year when you changed your mind, tried something new, or adapted in the moment. What did that flexibility teach you? What might you want to carry forward?
