Head Down, Get It Done
Stop Riding Into the Wind Alone
Here is a quote, a resource, a book, and an affirmation to help you power through the rest of the week.
QUOTE
"Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period." — Robert Waldinger
RESOURCE
At this time of year, you might be in "Head Down, Get It Done" mode. Lunch at your desk. Copies at 6:45. Your to-do list automatically refills and social connections can weaken a bit.
September does that. It narrows your world to the next thing on the list.
Cyclists have a name for riding like this: solo into the wind. Every pedal stroke is yours, and the wind takes a cut of all of them. Tuck in behind another rider's wheel in a paceline, and you can save somewhere between a quarter and a third of your effort. Same road. Same wind. Less of it lands on you.
The Harvard Study of Adult Development has followed people for more than 85 years. When the researchers looked at who was healthiest at 80, the best predictor wasn't cholesterol at 50. It was how satisfied people were with their relationships at 50. Robert Waldinger and his co-director Marc Schulz call this social fitness. It works like the physical kind: you maintain it, or it slowly slips.
In the STRONG Framework, this is the Outreach half of the O. Optimize is about your systems. Outreach is about your people, and it's the half that slides first when the calendar fills up.
In a paceline, the rider at the front takes the wind for a while, then peels off and drifts to the back to rest in the draft. Everyone takes a turn. Nobody pulls forever, and nobody only follows.
Outreach works the same way. Some weeks you're the one sending the text that says, "How's your fall going? Really?" Some weeks you're the one who needs that text. Both count, and both keep the line moving.
Start small. One wheel to tuck behind, and one person who can tuck behind yours. It might be the teacher across the hall, or a friend you haven't talked to since August. It might be the group chat you've had on mute.
October won't be any less windy. Stop riding it alone.

AFFIRMATION
I can take my turn at the front, and I can rest in someone else's draft.
P.S. If this week's issue has you thinking about who's in your paceline, try writing it down. The STRONG Teacher 4H Reflection Journal is a 30-day set of four short prompts: Highlight, Horizon, Hiccup, Harvest. It's new on Ko-fi, in printable PDF and fillable Word versions. 👉 ko-fi.com/whyedify
