Why Every Teacher Should Write a Year-End Gratitude List

Each year, as the final bell rings and summer calls, I take time to write down everything I’m grateful for at my school. It’s a simple tradition—but one that has transformed how I reflect on the school year. Whether it’s a kind word from a colleague, a breakthrough with a student, or a successful classroom project, this list reminds me that even in a challenging year, there’s so much good to be found.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to close out your school year, consider starting this practice. Here’s why it’s worth your time.

1. Reframe the Year with Positivity

Teaching is demanding. It’s easy to focus on what didn’t go well—the missed deadlines, tough behaviors, or unexpected changes. But writing a gratitude list shifts the focus. It helps you identify the small wins and meaningful moments that might have been overshadowed. This reflection can provide closure and a much-needed sense of accomplishment.

2. Boost Your Well-Being

Numerous studies link gratitude to improved mental health. By making time to reflect on what you’re thankful for, you can reduce stress and boost feelings of contentment. Ending the year with a gratitude practice sets a positive tone for the summer break and helps you recharge emotionally.

3. Highlight Personal and Professional Growth

A gratitude list often reveals how much you and your students have grown. Maybe you’re thankful for trying a new instructional strategy that worked, or for learning to navigate tough parent conversations better. These reflections can inform your goals for the coming year and remind you of your progress.

4. Strengthen Community and Relationships

When you’re intentional about gratitude, you start noticing and appreciating the people around you more. Including specific colleagues, students, or teams in your list can help deepen those relationships—and even inspire you to share your thanks with them directly.

5. Model Reflective Practice for Students

If you choose to share your list or make it a class activity, you’re modeling emotional awareness and reflective thinking for your students. It teaches them to value their own learning journeys and the people who support them along the way.

My Year-End Gratitude List

Here’s a glimpse into what I’m grateful for this year. Writing this reminds me just how much there is to appreciate—especially in the day-to-day rhythm of school life.

  1. I am grateful to teach in a beautiful, modern school that is well-maintained.
  2. I have amazing and dedicated teaching colleagues.
  3. My administration is supportive and encourages me to try new things in my classroom.
  4. The paraprofessionals I work with are incredibly helpful.
  5. I have access to a science lab that would make most high school teachers envious.
  6. I get to work at a PreK–8 school, which means I see students of all ages grow and learn.
  7. I feel that a majority of my community views our school positively.
  8. I rarely need to purchase school materials with my own money.
  9. I have my own office connected to my classroom.
  10. The school culture is one where every adult works to help kids become the best students—and people—they can be.

What would your list look like? I invite you to try this practice and see what rises to the surface. Even a short list can shift your mindset and remind you of the meaningful work you do every day.
