Find Something You Love then Do Something About It

When in doubt, find something you love and then do something about it.

I'm on the board of directors of a YMCA camp and this weekend we had the board retreat. It was my first one. I was a counselor and a trips director (probably my favorite job of all time) over five years of my young adulthood.

My experience working at camp led me down the path to becoming a teacher. I met my wife at camp. For many kids, including my own, time spent at camp equals pure joy. They talk about their camp adventures all year long.

I want kids to have a camp experience and to support the camp staff that works so hard to provide amazing programming.

I sat on the sidelines for years. Joining the board of directors involved stepping out of my comfort zone. I was worried it would take too much of my time. I wasn't sure I could take any more meetings in my life.

After this weekend I'm happy with my decision. What a great feeling to be in a room of people who all want kids to have a meaningful camping experience. The meetings were long. There were agreements and disagreements. The common thread remained.

I'm in the first year of my three-year commitment. I'll be in the arena trying to do my best.

Here's my advice should you choose to take it.
