As the final bell rings and the school doors close for summer, a familiar question floats in the minds of many teachers: “What should I be doing with this time?”

The pressure to be productive doesn’t take a vacation. Whether it’s organizing next year’s materials, planning new units, or finally tackling that stack of professional books, there’s an unspoken belief that summer is an “opportunity” to get ahead.

And while there’s nothing wrong with prepping if it brings you joy, it’s worth asking: Is that what you really need right now?

What if summer isn’t just time off—but time in?

Inward. Intentional. Restorative.

Teachers give so much of themselves during the school year—emotionally, mentally, and physically. The work is deeply human, and the energy required is immense. So when summer arrives, it’s not just a break from the classroom; it’s a chance to refill what’s been poured out.

This season is permission to:

  • Sleep without an alarm.
  • Read for pleasure.
  • Take a walk with no destination.
  • Reconnect with hobbies that got sidelined.
  • Sit in stillness without a to-do list chasing you.

Rest is not idleness. It’s not laziness. It’s healing.

And here’s the twist: true restoration often leads to the very things we think we should be chasing. Creativity returns. Insight deepens. Patience expands. But it doesn’t come from pushing—it comes from softening.

So let’s flip the script on what summer “should” be.

Instead of productivity, let’s prioritize presence.
Instead of performance, let’s embrace play.
Instead of guilt, let’s practice grace.

Let your summer be what you need—not what the culture of hustle suggests you should do. Your worth isn’t tied to your output, even in the off-season.

This is your time to be human first, teacher second.

So go ahead—kick off your shoes, grab a good book, take a long nap, or simply do nothing at all. In doing so, you’re doing something incredibly important: becoming whole again.

And that, more than anything, is what your students need next year.
