Simplicity by Subtraction
What is one thing I can subtract—at work or in life—to make more room for what matters?
Quote
“In your actions, don’t procrastinate. In your conversations, don’t confuse. In your thoughts, don’t wander. In your soul, don’t be passive or aggressive. In your life, don’t be all about business.” — Marcus Aurelius

In her essay “Simplicity: Can Life Really Be Simple?”, psychologist Dr. Amy Johnson reminds us that complexity often begins in the mind—not in the actual demands of life. Her invitation isn’t to do more, but to subtract what no longer serves—to return, again and again, to clarity.
For educators, this can be a lifeline. Whether you’re in the classroom or at home, try this simplicity practice to create more space and calm:
- At School – Notice a recurring task or expectation that feels heavy. Ask: Is this truly necessary, or could less be more? Maybe it's an over-complicated lesson plan or an internal drive for perfection. Release one small piece.
- At Home – Scan your evening or weekend. What pressure or habit could you ease up on—emails after dinner, multitasking through rest? Choose one way to simplify your rhythm.
Dr. Johnson puts it simply: “When there is less illusion, there is more clarity.” In both professional and personal settings, less noise creates space for presence and peace.
Now Repeat…
I release what weighs me down, at school and at home. I welcome clarity, one gentle choice at a time.
