Importance of Schools

I saved this Twitter thread a while back. It's something that I've been thinking about the last few years. With rapidly rotating news cycles, I hope we don't lose sight of how important schools are to the fabric of our society. Our pandemic experience has revealed this to be true.

Schools Become the One-Stop-Shop

I would argue that schools do more to support children now than at any other time in history. Maybe it's time to go all in and make neighborhood schools the one-stop-shop. They can become a bedrock of support in the communities they serve, even more than they are right now.

We the Taxpayers

We currently provide school supplies, dental care, counseling (when staff is available), breakfast, lunch, afterschool programming, homework help, backpacks of food each weekend, an on-site nurse, and summer school. When I say "we" I mean community taxpayers. Why not offer complete health care for students and their families? How could that not pay off?

No Brainer

If there is one area of society that should not be political it's how we invest in our children. From my perspective, it's a no-brainer.

When we take care of our children, we take care of our future.
